TRAILS/EBIKE SAFETY REMINDER
The trails and sidewalks in Wellsville City are for non motorized use.
If the bike you are riding does not have peddles it is not an E-bicycle and IS NOT PERMITTED in these areas.
These vehicles are in fact Motorcycles and will be treated as such under the law and will be considered as trespassers.
As with any bike, a bell or warning system is recommended to protect others and yourself when approaching other users and blind spots.
We are reaching out to share important information regarding electric bicycle (e-bike) safety under Utah State law.
Our goal is to promote safety and awareness.
E-Bike Safety and Utah Law
Electric bicycles are becoming increasingly popular among residents.
Under Utah law, e-bikes are divided into three classifications (Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3) based on speed and motor assistance.
- Class 1 e-bikes are pedal-assisted with a maximum speed of 20 MPH. The motor provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling.
- Class 2 e-bikes have throttle-assist and a maximum speed of 20 MPH. The motor can be engaged without pedaling.
- Class 3 e-bikes are pedal-assisted with a maximum speed of 28 MPH. The motor only provides assistance when the rider is pedaling.
- Any motorized bike above class 3 capabilities is considered an electronic motorcycle, and any operator of that e-motorcycle must be a licensed driver and have a motorcycle endorsement on their driver’s license.
With this in mind, please note:
- Riders under 16 years of age may not operate a Class 3 e-bike.
- Riders under 14 years of age may only operate an e-bike when supervised by a parent or guardian.
- E-bike riders must follow the same traffic laws as traditional bicycles, including obeying traffic signals and yielding to pedestrians.
- Safe operation—especially around schools, sidewalks, and crosswalks—is essential to protect students and the community. Students should always wear a helmet when riding.
We encourage families to review e-bike classifications and safety expectations together. Proper helmet use, speed awareness, and respectful riding on and near school property greatly reduce the risk of accidents and injuries. All e-bikes must be parked in school-designated bike racks.
