Wellsville Parks and Recreation Committee August 4th, 2009 Minutes
Committee Members in attendance: Gary Bates, Jackie Orton, Mary Ann Degn, Margo Pierce, Natalie Bates, Eric Baugh, Paul Thorpe, Jaye Colling
Rex Bailey came and updated the committee on Founders Day Rodeo. Rex needs the city mower to cut down weeds for Rodeo Grounds. Rex has 2 sets of bleachers to finish, but they have already been assigned out through the city and will be finished for Labor Day. Rex will give a sheet to Natalie for the website. Gary will ask Pres. Evans about putting it in the church bulletins. Rex will check on a banner for across the center street..
Eric Baugh reported on the Tennis Courts. They are all Beaten up and the nets are trashed. Cracks run through the courts. A bid to professionally fill in the cracks and paint is $12K. Eric will get a bid for net. The receipt for the last fix up is trying to be located. Gary will take back to city council. Eric will take the nets down for winter. Community Fishery Looking into controlling moss and weeds.
The council went over the Parks And Recreation Rules for Parks, Playgrounds and Facilities. Some changes were proposed and all members in attendance voted to send the Resolution with the changes to the city council.
The committee discussed the problem of the Geese at Black Willow Park. Gary suggested all members of the committee go the park before our next meeting and come prepared with suggestions on making that a more inviting Park.
Update on the Fishery. Bret Jorgensen has accepted the position of Fishing Specialist. Committee recommends asking Bret to put together a youth fishing day. Youth fishing day to be on Free Fishing Day. Brigham City has a day for lessons during the summer to teach kids to fish. Margo to ask Bret to get in touch with their Rec. Director. This Program would be for next year.
Committee would be interested in a cleaning station. Gary will ask Chris Penny about Funding for a fishing station.
Eagle Scout projects are signed off for completion.
The current Sports directors need to be contacted, Wendy Egbert, Diane Roundy, and Jeff Lowe, to see what their plans are for next year.

Glen & Kayleen Ames came to our Meeting to help the committee make an informed decision on the cities policies for bike races. They introduced how they got into cycling and the health and wellness benefits of cycling.
Glen recommends a city representative to coordinate with the event manager. He volunteered his services to the city. Glen also recommended not raising the current fee for small events, 750 people or less, but does encourage the city to charge the large events. They suggested $4-$5 a head. They suggested we allow citizens to set up booths on square to make money, and charge for parking.
Some of the problems they pointed out with the large events were, parking and town congestion. They recommended not scheduling anything else at the square the date of a large gathering.
For interest of time, discussion of Biking will be next month
Wellsville Dam update. Taylor Clark, is doing the Eagle Project of removing the sand and planting grass in the Volley Ball court at the dam. He will wait until cooler weather so the grass will survive. He told Gary it will be done by Founders day.
Dirt dumped into the wetlands.
Covers for Dug outs Jeff Lowe & Gary talked about.
Bridge and Trail still on list 15th of August for firm commitment.
Trail for sure, money is there, but not available until September 1st.
The Tabernacle playground needs to assign placement of two park benches
