As a reminder to those residents who may have a home occupation, it is time to renew your business license for 2012. If you have received a renewal form, please return the form to the city office ASAP. If you are currenty engaged in a business here in Wellsville, but are not licensed, please contact the City Office to apply for business license. It is a Class B Misdemeanor to operate a businee without a business license.

This year you can register online or in person for spring soccer. Online registration will be from January 9 to February 11. Online registraction received after February 4 will be assessed a late charge. To register online go to www.uysa-wellsville.sportsaffinity.com. To register in person, we will be holding registration on Saturday January 21 and Saturday January 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, in the building east of the city office.

Free sandbags are available for pickup (while supplies last) at the fire station next to the City Office on Main Street.

Wellsville City is joining with the Cache County Sheriff’s Office and the Cache County Emergency Response Team (CERT) Council to offer an 8-week course for people interested in learning how to take care of themselves, their families, and their communities in an emergency.

There is no fee for the course, however training material and supplies (manual, ID card, instruction materials, and basic CERT kit) will cost approximately $50.00. Wellsville City will reimburse city residents who successfully complete this course (requires attending all 8 classes and the simulated emergency). For more information, contact City Council member Ron Case at 245-4021. Pre-registration is required.

Dates: Thursdays beginning March 8, 2012 (no class will be held the week of Spring Break)
Time: 6:30 p.m. Each class lasts for approximately 2-1/2 hours.
Location: Cache County Sheriff’s Office, 3rd Floor, 1225 West Valley View Highway, Logan.
Ages: 18 years and older.

In addition to the weekly training, the course ends with a simulated emergency held at the Logan City Fire Department Training Tower. This allows participants a hands-on opportunity to put their training to use. The date for this simulated emergency is yet to be determined but is expected to be in early May.

Everyone in the community would benefit in receiving this training. CERT Training provides important information and skills for people of all ages and physical capabilities. The Mayor and City Council encourage you to give serious consideration in attending these valuable classes.

Notice is hereby given that the City Council will conduct a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. during its regular council meeting on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at the city offices at 75 East Main. 

The purpose of the public hearing is to receive public input on a matter the council has been considering and working on for numerous months.  The city has a code that requires open space in subdivisions. Over the years the council has realized that having open space in each subdivision is not always for the best, and there may be property the council feels is more meaningful as open space in a different area. 

Therefore in 2008, the city adopted a code where at the option of the developer and council that the developer pays the city an “in lieu of open space” fee, and the city can then purchase property it feels should be preserved as open space. 

Before the council proceeds any further they would like your  input and for all residents to be aware that the property is owned by Tom Maughan, who is also a city employee. 

The property under consideration is located as follows: after you turn off Highway 89/91 onto main street (coming into downtown Wellsville) it is a portion of the meadow land on both sides of Main Street after you cross the Little Bear River.  All details will be explained at the public hearing.  If you have questions you can call Don Hartle at 245-3686. 

We encourage you to attend the public hearing, however if you have input or concerns on the matter, and are unable to attend the public hearing, please put any comments in writing and deliver to Don by 3:00 p.m. on December 6, 2011.

The Wellsville City Irrigation Company will be holding its annual shareholders meeting on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at the Wellsville City Office.  All shareholders are invited to attend.

A new state law requires city council in all municipalities to have a written Rules of Procedure and Order. A copy of the document must be available at the city office, at all city council meetings, and on the city website. A copy of the Rules can be found here.

As snow piles up in the winter, we often turn to salt to melt snow and ice.  Excess salt can seep into groundwater and stormwater runoff.  Effective ice control can help prevent excess salt runoff to our waterways. 

There are many alternatives to salt, including potassium chloride, calcium chloride and magnesium acetate.  Most can be found in hardware stores under various trade names, so check the labels for chemical content.  While these alternatives can be spread in a dry form or sprayed as a liquid, their best use occurs when they are used with salt.  They tend to increase the efficiency of salt thereby reducing the amount that needs to be applied. 

Keep in mind that your first line of defense should simply be to shovel sidewalks and pathways to keep them clean and to prevent ice from forming.  Also consider that salt and de-icers are not effective when more than 3 inches of snow have accumulated.

On Tuesday, November 8, 2011 Wellsville City residents will be electing three city council members. Each position is for a 4-year term. 

Voting will take place at the central LDS church building located at 49 West 200 South. Voting is open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Early Voting will take place October 25-November 4 (two weeks prior to the election).  Registered voters can vote early in the City Office during office hours – Monday thru Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Gary Bates: As a City Councilor I am privileged to work with many outstanding Wellsville citizens.  I hope I represent you well.  My Primary Council assignment is to oversee the Parks and Recreation program.  This is a very dynamic process and we have had very little funding to work with.  Thanks to the hard work of many volunteers, we have made significant progress.  The Wellsville Dam park and parking lot, athletic field improvements, new walking trail and pedestrian bridge were funded with donations, grants, and new construction fees.  New grants will expand the trail system and build a small City park in the Redslide neighborhood.  Other programs I sponsored include: youth fishing, music in the park, healthy city award, more then 40 Eagle projects, a neighborhood watch program for our parks, and expanding our youth sports programs.  With your help we have much more work to do. Please vote “Gary Bates” on November 8^th.

Carl Leatham: I am Carl Leatham, and I am running for re-election to the Wellsville City Council.  I have served on the Wellsville City Council for the past two years.  Prior to the council, I served on the Planning and Zoning Commission for five and half years.  I’m a strong believer in personal property rights and protecting them.  At the same time, I see the need for zoning to protect your neighbor’s rights also.  I also feel that we need to further develop and promote the commercial zones that Wellsville has in place to provide Wellsville with the services we need as well as the tax base to fund city infrastructure improvements.  We all want to preserve the community we have.  This is what I have been doing and I will continue for in your behalf.  Thank you for your support.

Glenna Petersen: “Good things come to those who go for it!” I received this plaque from a friend after finishing two bachelor degrees at USU this May.  That’s what I am doing now-going for Wellsville City Council. I am a mother, educator, and involved citizen. I volunteered for Wellsville City for several things, and one was an Emergency Medical Technician.  I love this city and the people and want to know your concerns and opinions on what is happening.  By listening to you as a citizen and gathering information from experts, I will vote for what is best for Wellsville.

Some things I will stand for: ▪ Minimal taxes or fees ▪Giving credence to all requests ▪Lease amount of restriction on citizens

Kevin Tingey: I own and operate a small construction company in the valley; The Solution of Wellsville LLC. In 1999 I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Utah State University.  I then went on to San Diego and from Thomas Jefferson School of Law obtained a Juries Doctorate in 2003.  I enjoy the technology of science and the theory of law but I really love the satisfaction of building things.  This knowledge gives me a unique perspective.  As a councilman I will know how things work in the physical realm while dealing with the legal realities of modern business.

I am a team player; I have worked with a varied workforce and know how to work with others to get the job done.  I enjoy challenges and will put my all into keeping Wellsville the great place that it has always been.

Randy Wall: My family and I love the rural, small town of Wellsville. The residents of Wellsville are good people that take care of each other as well as our community.

I own and run a small business. I have served on a board of directors.  I was in charge of the 2011 Cache Valley Cruise-In car show.

I am an open minded person that wants to know all the facts and concerns of our citizens before making decisions.  My only agenda is to serve the residents of Wellsville.  I would like to see us, as a community save the icon of this great city-the Wellsville Tabernacle is worth preserving.

I believe that my unique perspective can and will help the Wellsville community.  I look forward to serving you.

Wellsville City was one of five Utah cities selected to receive a 2011 Utah Healthy City award during the recent Utah League of Cities and Town meetings in Salt Lake City. Wellsville City qualified as a result of improvements made in our Parks and Recreation programs over the past few years.
