Important Public Hearing

Posted on Jul 3rd 2010 by City Staff.

A public hearing is being held at 7:00 p.m. on July 7, 2010 at the City Offices at 75 East Main. A presentation and discussion will be held concerning the construction of a 1,000,000 gallon water reservoir. The hearing would allow for the adoption of a code amendment increasing the monthly culinary water rates. A loan requirement of the Board of Water Resources stipluates that each resident must receive a form which will allow you to express your support or opposition to the project. This form can be brought into the city office or mailed to one of the addresses listed on the form. The form must be returned by July 23, 2010.

A copy of the form was included in July water billing. A copy can also be downloaded here.

Mayor Bailey and the City Council strongly encourage your attendance at this Public Hearing.

Trail Construction

Posted on Jul 3rd 2010 by City Staff.

Construction has begun on the walking trail around the Wellsville Dam. This is a significant event as the trail marks the beginning of the end of a process that began nearly 9 years ago.

Construction begins on the Wellsville Dam Walking Trail

During this time many improvements have been made at the Wellsville Dam. They include:

* Adoption of a Parks and Trails Master Plan* The Children’s Park and playground equipment
* Reseeding of the lawn around the playground
* Trees and Benches donated by our citizens
* Improvements to the ball field (moving and upgrading the batting cages, new dugout coverings, refinishing the spectator benches)
* Cleanup of the stream and covering of the canal
* Converting the volleyball pit from sand to grass
* Changing the Dam to a Community Fishery and opening it to year-round fishing
* Working with the DWR to reduce the non-native weeds and plants illegally introduced into the dam
* Realigning and enlarging of the parking lot

The trail on the west side of the dam

No funds from property taxes were used to pay for these improvements. Instead monies came from grants, RAPZ tax, citizen donations (of both time and money) and many Eagle Scout projects.

Special thanks goes to Mayors Thomas Bailey and Ruth Maughan, members of the current City Council (especially council member Gary Bates who has overseen much of this project), former council members Dick Wells, Marcene Parker, Lynn Cooper, and Kent Brenchley, members of the Parks and Recreation Committee, generous Wellsville citizens, and many talented Eagle Scout candidates, their parents and leaders.

The trail should be completed in a few weeks. Watch for further announcements here on the City website.

Vandalism

Posted on Jul 3rd 2010 by City Staff.

Recently some serious vandalism took place at the Wellsville Tabernacle. All of the outdoor splotlights were broken, as well as some of the windows. A $200 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator(s) of the vandalism. If you have any information regarding this, please contact the city office as soon as possible. It is unfortunate that the disrespectful and malicious acts of someone can take your tax dollars to pay for their acts, so we encourage community members to be watchful and report any suspicious activity they see.

Thanks to Fish Derby Volunteers

Posted on Jul 3rd 2010 by City Staff.

On behalf of our community, the Mayor and City Council would like to extend a big thanks to Brett Jorgensen and all of those who assisted in making our Youth Fishing Derby a huge success. We had a great turn out, tons of prizes, and everyone, even the 4 and 5 year olds, caught a fish or two. We’ll hold this activity again next year , so plan to attend. Thanks again to all those who made this fun day possible!

This lucky 3-year old caught the first fish of the Derby.

Fun for the whole family!

Sidewalk Improvements

Posted on Jul 3rd 2010 by City Staff.

The city is replacing part of the sidewalk around the City Square. The portion along 100 East is being replaced this summer. Steve Kerr Construction is the contractor for the job and the dirt and grass are being replaced as part of an Eagle Project. City Council member Jackie Orton has been the driving force behind this project. Upgrading our exisitng sidewalks is part of an on-going, long-term project and additional sidewalks will be replaced around town as funds are available.

SLOW DOWN!!!

Posted on Jul 3rd 2010 by City Staff.

Speeding along our city streets is one of the biggest complaints received by the mayor, the city council, and the city offices.  A quick review of speeding tickets issued in town indicates that it is our citizens, not strangers passing through, who are doing most of the speeding. Please be aware of your speed when you are driving. You may feel like you know the streets and you are not a hazard but it only takes a second to cause an accident that can have long-term affects on many people. The City Council has asked the Sheriff’s Department to increase their efforts to stop speeding in town.
.

Did you know that the speed limit on all streets in Wellsville is 25 MPH, unless posted otherwise. All enterances into town have a sign posted like the one shown above. There is no excuse for exceeding the legal speed limit.

Road Construction

Posted on Jul 3rd 2010 by City Staff.

If you have tried to travel along 200 West this summer you already know that most of it is under construction. Wellsville City has a road plan where all city roads are resurfaced about every 15 years and completely rebuilt approximately every 30 years. This year 200 West between 500 South and 700 South and between 900 South almost to the Highway 89/81 turn, is being rebuilt. Until construction is complete in the next few weeks traffic is restricted to residents who live along 200 West.

Sewer Clean-out

Posted on Jul 3rd 2010 by City Staff.

Beginning August 2nd, the city will begin cleaning out many of the sewer main lines throughout the city. At times, the pressure created while cleaning the lines can cause the water in toilet bowls to gurgle or splash. In order to avoid back splash, please keep the lids on your toliets closed during the month of August.

House Numbers

Posted on Jul 3rd 2010 by City Staff.

The fire department would like to remind residents to be aware that house numbers should be at least 3″ high and should be clearly visible from the road. This can help the fire department and/or first responders locate your home quicker in an emergency and save precious time.

Smoke detector batteries also need to be replaced periodically. If you have any questions please contact Clint Kerr at 757-3376

Storm Water

Posted on Jul 3rd 2010 by City Staff.

The Environmental Protection Agency requires Wellsville City to obtain a yearly permit as well as submit a detailed report describing our procedures and actions used to eliminate pollution and keep it from being distributed downstream. Ideas on how residents can help will be suggested in future newsletters and here on the Storm Water page of our website.
